GREAT SCHOOLS HAVE GREAT PARENT PARTICIPATION!
Change YOUR life by reaching out to another! Help mentor a student who may be struggling in English or Math. For many kids, learning to read and to do basic math requires more than the typical classroom setting can provide. Students who, for a number of reasons, have fallen behind need more individual attention to catch up to their peers.

Research shows that children can learn faster and become more self-reliant when they are taught one-on-one. An equally important benefit to the student is the increase in self-esteem that results from a relationship with a caring mentor. School districts that use mentoring programs have found that student absenteeism and discpline referrals decrease because of the positive impact that community members have on students.

WHAT DO MENTORS DO?
The mentor's role is to work with an individual student using materials and activities assigned by the Principal at the school. A mentor works with a student on specific skills and provides feedback on performance to the student and the teacher.

The mentor volunteers just one hour a week. Schedules are arranged so that volunteers can request a time convenient to them and be assured of working at a specific time on a regular basis. This allows them to fit mentoring into their busy schedule while establishing a continuing relationship with the student they are mentoring.

AM I QUALIFIED TO MENTOR?
If you have a desire to help someone, enjoy working with young people and are able to follow directions, you are qualified. The teacher developes the easy-to-follow lesson plans for each student. All you do is carry out the instruction for the day. Volunteers are asked to attend a training session given by the Principal to introduce you to the program, materials you will use and your specific duties. You will be guided and supported through the year to ensure a successful experience for you and your student.
